Marukai at Ward Village to close in September

Signs were posted on the doors this week notifying customers of the upcoming September 30th closure at Ward Village's popular Marukai Market Place store. Howard Hughes Corp is moving forward with it's plans to develop that area where Marukai, REAL a Gastropub, and various warehouses currently sit to make way for it's central plaza. The plaza will be the center of community activity in Ward Village to include the Farmers Market, Courtyard Cinema, Kona Nui Nights among other events.

'Vertical' school prototype in Kaka'ako moves forward

The proposed public school envisioned for urban Honolulu next to Mother Waldron Park in Kaka'ako, was given the green light by the board of the Hawaii Housing Finance and Development (HHFDC) to negotiate an agreement with the Department of Education for a four-story 'vertical' elementary school as part of a two-tower apartment complex to be developed by a private developer. The complex at 690 Pohukaina Street will provide much needed rentals for both affordable and low-income residents.

Kaka'ako Farmers Market moving in July

The popular Kaka'ako Farmer's Market at Ward Warehouse along Auahi Street held every Saturday from 8am to 12noon, will relocate to it's new location at the Ross Dress for Less parking lot on Ward Avenue beginning July 15th. Be sure visit all your favorite vendors such as The Rice Factory pictured here.

Patagonia starts work on prime Kakaako lot

Work started this week at the site of the Universal Building on Ward Avenue in preparation for it's new owner's relocation. Purchased back in 2014 for $8.5 million from the Tsukamoto family, this 23,000 sf lot was formerly occupied by the Lightbulb Source, New Nigori Cocktail Lounge, OK TV & Appliance among others. With access from three major streets, Waimanu, Ward & Kawaihao, this prime piece of real estate in Kakaako will become the new home of Patagonia currently operating next to Wahoo's Fish Taco on the corner of Ward & Auahi.

New Wave Fridays draws a crowd

In only the second time since it debuted last month, New Wave Fridays at South Shore Market in Ward Village, drew a curious but lively crowd. The perfect place to spend your pau hana Fridays with entertainment, unique merchants to explore, and of course tasty grinds. And don't forget the pop-up bar by GastroPub. What makes this an attractive alternative to the Eat The Street events of late, is the laid back family vibe, lots of seating for dinning or kicking back, plus air conditioned shopping indoors as well as the outdoor vendors. You can be sure this 2nd Friday of every month event held from 5pm to 9pm, will grow in popularity especially once all the retailer's have opened, and restaurant

Sculpture installed then hidden

Early this morning a massive sculpture was installed at the entrance of the soon to be completed Anaha, a luxury condo in Kakaako. Once in place, workers quickly wrapped the modern art piece. We caught a glimpse of the activity on the former Pier 1 Imports site at the corner of Kamake'e and Auahi, before the coverup began and before we could retrieve our camera. You'll just have to wait for the grand unveiling and blessing ceremony to see this new addition, currently hidden from view .

Urban Bikeway Opens In Kakaako

Honolulu's second protected bike lane was opened on Wednesday in the urban core, improving access to the downtown and Kakaako areas. The bikeway running mauka-makai from King to Pohukaina streets then seaward to Ala Moana Boulevard, is near many of the new developing high-rises and the proposed future site of the Civic Center Rail Station. This South Street bikeway is the latest city initiative in an effort to give residents an alternative to fighting traffic while making Oahu more bike friendly.

83% of Ward Village condos sold

In it's first quarter report to shareholders, Howard Hughes Corp. reported a total of 82.8 percent of units either closed or under contract as of April 18. The four towers include Aeo, Anaha, Ke Kilohana & Waiea in Ward Village in Honolulu. A recently announced new condo Aalii hopes to begin sales in the second quarter of this year.
